Traditional Garden Gnomes

A nice friend

While we are walking in a nice and quiet neighborhood, on a beautiful early spring evening and many picturesque gardens are visible along the street, suddenly a strange and small figure appears with a bright red hat and a bushy beard looking at us through the bushes. Who is he? When and why did it become popular to put figures with short or long beards in gardens?

The idea of garden statuary dates back to Roman times, and various gnome-like statues appeared in Renaissance gardens in Italy, but the classic garden gnome as we know it today is drawn from Germanic folklore.

On the other hand, today's garden gnomes are derived from the legendary "Gnomes" from various myths and fairy tales. Gnomes have always been described as small (a few centimeters high) and robust beings who live in nature, usually underground.

In the collective imagination the emphasis is usually put on their bright red pointed hats, their solid colored clothes and the typical long white beard. Certainly, it is an archetype that we at Gnome For You have respected, however a multitude of others are in store and well and truly available!

It seems that gnomes are also the guardians of well hidden underground treasures. Even in modern times, some - like the influential mystic Rudolph Steiner - say that gnomes are involved in the secret alchemy of plant life.

So, need a little magic? Our delightful creatures with personality will welcome guests! A humorous and friendly looking figure, a garden gnome knows how to pull off original decorating ideas.

The garden gnome often appears in a colorful cameo: a consensus seems to be demonstrated on this point. Bright or vivid colors (it depends), no one shows it beige, dull or monotonous. This is a tradition that we have kept. Sometimes dressed in extravagant outfits and whose colors will ennoble the exterior visual to create a clement environment.

Whether you choose delightfully discreet or very eccentric dwarfs, they will make unique and joyful gifts!

Origin of the gnomes

Gnomes are old spirits of the earth and mountains. They have accompanied the human race throughout our history and can be found in many folk tales from almost every European country.

Gnomes have different names and different characteristics depending on the culture they belong to.

  • Erdmanleins or Heinzemannchens (Germany)
  • Nisse (Norway)
  • Tontti (Finland)
  • Foddenskkmaend (Iceland)
  • Dudje (Bulgaria)
  • Skritek (Belgium)
  • Mano (Hungary)
  • Kleinmanneken (Switzerland)
  • Domovoi Djedoes (Russia)

The word comes from the Latin gnomus (which means inhabitant of the earth). Closer to us, the existence of gnomes has been reused by more recent authors, especially in modern fantasy literature.

Garden gnome with a lantern

In the company of a lantern, funny and full of kindness he will take care of the outdoor decorations. This little man in the furnishing of an outdoor space will be able to be installed within other objects of decorations, either next to a tree.

Since we have at heart the respect of the environment and to free of worries the purchasers of our products, it is to know that all the lanterns attributed to the garden gnomes at Gnome For You work with solar energy: they are charged during the day with the light of the sun and are ready to illuminate at night (principle which we often find in our outside lightings)

Of course, a nice way to combine the useful with the pleasant. Light and humorous in its type of decoration, a luminescent garden gnome (accompanied by a lantern) will also be a nice way to mark the path to the entrance for more security. After all, what could be better than the warm glow of such a lantern to accompany pleasant evenings with friends.

For the more daring among you, such a luminous garden gnome could even work in the design decor for the house. Inside the dining room, to be placed near the furniture, next to the armchairs or also the plants in a vase as a night light.

Design

As for the materials of which it is conceived, usually composed of ceramic (clay), porcelain, we stick for our part to the plastic resin, more resistant and durable. It is a material chosen for its lightness and its flexibility in design, which allows indeed much artistic freedom. However, all our figurines are meticulously hand painted.
